Derivation of a Sharp-Diffuse Interfaces Model for Seawater Intrusion in a Free Aquifer. Numerical Simulations

چکیده
We derive a new model for seawater intrusion phenomena in free aquifers. It combines the efficiency of the sharp interface approach with the physical realism of the diffuse interface one. More precisely, a phase field is used as an intermediate variable for including the exchanges between the characteristic layers of the aquifer (salt water, fresh water, unsaturated zone). The threedimensional problem is reduced to a two-dimensional model involving a strongly coupled system of PDEs of parabolic type describing the evolution of the depths of the two free surfaces. The model is discretized by finite elements in space and by a semi-implicit Euler method in time. Numerical simulations present some physical predictions from the model.

Abstraction, desalination and recharge method to control seawater intrusion into unconfined coastal aquifers
In this study, abstraction, desalination and recharge method and SEAWAT numerical model are used to investigate seawater intrusion repulsion in a hypothetical two-dimensional coastal aquifer to understand the relation of seawater intrusion with abstraction, desalination and recharge parameters (i.e. abstraction/recharge rate, wells distance and depth). Abstraction, desalination and recharge con...
متن کاملManagement of aquifer recharge in Lebanon by removing seawater intrusion from coastal aquifers.
This study investigates the feasibility of management of aquifer recharge (MAR) in Lebanon by designing well barriers to remove seawater intrusion from the fractured carbonate aquifers. Groundwater flow and saltwater/freshwater 50% sharp interface have been modeled along the coastal area using the Ghyben-Herzberg theory. The groundwater flow simulations have been supported by field transmissivi...
متن کاملA correction factor to account for mixing in Ghyben-Herzberg and critical pumping rate approximations of seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers
[1] The classic Ghyben‐Herzberg estimate of the depth of the freshwater‐saltwater interface together with the Dupuit approximation is a useful tool for developing analytical solutions to many seawater intrusion problems. On the basis of these assumptions, Strack (1976) developed a single‐potential theory to calculate critical pumping rates in a coastal pumping scenario. The sharp interface assu...
متن کاملA Generalized Approach for Modeling 3D Transient Free and Moving Boundaries in Coastal Aquifers
Coastal aquifers involve varying conditions in time and space, owing to the occurrence of free and moving boundaries, such as the water table, seepage face and saltwater intrusion interface. A fast Updating Procedure (FUP) is developed for solving these interfaces in steady and transient conditions with the finite element method. Several test examples, which involve confined and phreatic ground...
متن کاملNumerical Modelling of Seawater Intrusion in Manukan Island's Aquifer
A numerical model SEAWAT-2000 was developed to investigate the current seawater intrusion status in the low lying area of Manukan Island. SEAWAT-2000 output indicated that there is about 1.4% of freshwater and seawater mixing ratio at sea level in low lying area of Manukan Island illustrates the seawater intrusion problem. Upconing process simulated by SEAWAT-2000 showed the current status of s...
